Wright Motorsports Shows Strong Pace Before Road America Endurance Race Comes to an Early End

Wright Motorsports demonstrated strong pace throughout the six-hour IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship race at Road America, climbing 11 positions through the first five hours of the Motul SportsCar Endurance Grand Prix before an on-track incident ended the No. 120 Porsche 911 GT3 R’s charge through the field with less than an hour remaining.

The Ohio-based team entered the newly formatted Road America endurance event facing an uphill battle after an electrical issue during qualifying the day prior prevented them from setting a representative lap, leaving drivers Adam Adelson, Callum Ilott, and Tom Sargent to start the race from the back of the grid.

The race quickly developed into one of the most unpredictable events of the season. Nine full-course cautions interrupted the six-hour contest, while more than 40 penalties were handed out throughout the field, making it difficult for competitors to settle into a rhythm.

Adelson immediately began working his way forward when racing resumed after the first caution period, which came within the opening 15 minutes. He wasted no time climbing up the ranks all while engaged in tight back-and-forth battles. By the four-and-a-half-hour mark, he had climbed up to 12th.

Ilott then took over driving duties and maintained position as the race continued through additional caution periods, with the team remaining focused on maximizing energy management and keeping strategy options open heading into the second half of the endeavor. As Sargent got behind the wheel with just under two and a half hours to go, he continued the team's forward momentum. Despite the repeated interruptions, he moved into the top 10 and ultimately up to eighth position heading into the final hour of the race.

Unfortunately, the team's charge came to an early end with under sixty minutes on the clock after an incident that saw the car run off track and make contact with the tire barriers. 

“ Obviously this is not the way we wanted the race to go,” expressed Tom Sargent. “The team gave me a great opportunity, a good car, and I wanted to finish the race for them on a strong note. I made a misjudgment and grabbed the curb, and then wasn’t able to recover from the error. We were in a decent position and moving forward. It was good fun and a good race, but just a disappointing way for it to end in that way. Hopefully we can come back stronger when I return with the team at Petit and do well there.” 

Wright Motorsports will now turn its attention to the next round of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship as they head to VIRginia International Raceway for the Michelin GT Challenge at VIR from August 21st to 23rd, 2026.
