RECAP: Wright Motorsports Sweeps SRO America Season Opening Weekend

SONOMA, Calif., (April 8, 2024) – Wright Motorsports is leaving Sonoma Raceway as the Fanatec GT World Challenge America championship points leaders after sweeping the first races of the 2024 season. Drivers Adam Adelson and Elliott Skeer, with the support of the crew of the No. 120 Porsche 911 GT3 R, drove a perfect weekend in their debut in the Pro class, earning one pole position and two dominating victories.

The start to the 2024 season was unlike a typical race weekend, when track delays led to the cancelation of over two days’ worth of on track testing and practice sessions. Despite the limited track time, the group at Wright Motorsports dialed in the Porsche’s set up and the drivers got up to speed quickly in preparation for the weekend’s two races.

Adam Adelson made his Pro-class debut from second in class and third overall. The Las Vegas native who now lives in California made it to the class lead by the time the race’s one and only full-course caution paused the racing in the opening lap. He ran up front throughout the entirety of his stint, running clean and consistent laps. He positioned Wright Motorsports in the perfect situation to continue the fight in the second stint, when, after a pit stop at the halfway point, Elliott Skeer took over. Due to the overall race leader starting their Pro driver, the No. 91 DXDT car held a significant lead over the field. But after the pit stops, their Am driver stepped in to finish the race, allowing Skeer, the Pro driver in Wright’s lineup, to close in by four seconds per lap, going full speed to the checkered flag. With 29 minutes remaining, he made the pass for the lead and sailed away, scoring the first victory of the season.

Thanks to a strong qualifying session the day before, Skeer started race two on Sunday where he finished the previous day, leading overall. He kept the position after the start of the green flag, staying in front of the No. 04 Mercedes AMG of Colin Braun. He masterfully maneuvered his way through the turns of Sonoma Raceway as if he were enjoying a casual Sunday drive, pitting at the halfway point to allow for Adelson to conclude the weekend. He joined the race well ahead of the No. 04, now piloted by George Kurtz in the Pro-Am class. Showing his constant progress as a young driver, Adelson maintained the lead with what looked like little effort, celebrating back-to-back victories and the championship points lead.

The fight for the 2024 Fanatec GT World Challenge America powered by AWS will resume at Sebring International Raceway May 3rd to 5th.

DRIVER QUOTES

Adam Adelson

What a weekend. Coming into our first pro-class race weekend, with an incredibly talented field of drivers, and to be able to sweep it is a dream come true. Elliott did an incredible job, ‘Mr. Track Recordholder’. Wright Motorsports did an absolutely incredible job. We all know that Porsches love Sonoma, and that makes me love Sonoma. I couldn’t be happier. This is such an incredible weekend. A huge thanks to everyone involved and for all their support. It’s great to celebrate this with my friends and family here.

Elliott Skeer

It was a perfect weekend from everyone at Wright Motorsport. Our Porsche was unbelievable, and our one test day paid off beautifully. We went very hard right out of the box in practice, and that paid off with how the track evolved over the next two days. We had a plan, we stuck to it, we executed it well. The team is gelling unbelievably, and the morale is through the roof. Ultimately, we’re just keeping the momentum going and doing what we know how to do. I can’t be more proud of Adam, ‘Big Speedman’. He’s turned into a proper monster and true silver driver this year. This is all everything I could ask for right now.
