EVENT PREVIEW: Wright Motorsports Heads to Iconic Indy for WeatherTech Sprint

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., (September 12, 2023) – The final IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship sprint race of the 2023 season has arrived, and the Wright Motorsports No. 77 VOLT Lighting Porsche 911 GT3 R is ready to electrify the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The TireRack.com Battle On The Bricks, a two-hour and forty-minute sports car racing showdown, takes place on Sunday, September 17.

“Our entire team has worked so hard all season to give our Porsche 911 GT3 R the best possible debut,” said Team Owner John Wright. “We’d love to build on our podium weekend at Lime Rock Park and be able to close out the last sprint race of the year kissing the bricks at such a legendary circuit. There’s so much history here at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and, as a team based in the Midwest, we would like to add another line with our names to that record book.”

While it's been nearly a decade since the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship last graced the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Wright Motorsports has tasted recent success on this sacred asphalt. In 2021, they clinched a stellar third place in the IGTC Indianapolis 8 Hour with an exceptional trio of drivers: Fred Poordad, Jan Heylen, and Max Root. Rewind to 2020, and the same triumphant trio concluded their season with a dazzling victory at the 8 Hour event.

Following the action-packed GT-only weekend at VIRginia International Raceway, all five classes of the WeatherTech championship will converge for the epic Battle On the Bricks, boasting a formidable fleet of 48 entries. In this high-octane ensemble, the GTD class reigns supreme with a whopping 27 contenders. Though the Speedway is most well-known for the oval that hosts the Indianapolis 500, the track also has a road course layout, which the IMSA WeatherTech series will use for the Battle On the Bricks. Competitors run clockwise on the 2.439 mile, 14-turn circuit, utilizing the front-straight, before driving into a technical section in the infield.

The two-hour and 40-minute race will air live on NBC, Sunday, September 17, beginning at 1:00 PM. Peacock subscribers will also be able stream the race live in its entirety. International audiences can watch live on imsa.com/tvlive.

Porsche Carrera Cup North America

Wright’s pair of Porsche 911 GT3 Cup cars enter another double header this weekend, returning to run in support of the IMSA WeatherTech series. John Goetz and Varun Choksey continue their full-season bid in the all-Porsche championship with Choksey in the Pro class and Goetz racing in the Am. With four sixth-place finishes, Choksey has momentum on his side as he races to earn a top-five finish before the end of what has been a progressive season for the young racer. Goetz has been on a roll, earning one win and four additional podium finishes in the first 10 of 16 rounds. Thirty entries are spread across the series’ three classes, all competing in the weekend’s pair of 40-minute races. Race one will begin on Saturday, September 16 at 2:30 PM, followed by Sunday, September 17 at 9:40 AM ET. Both races will air live on imsa.com/tvlive.

It’s taken a while but I have a feeling we are going to be in the hunt for this one! I'm feeling energized in our team's efforts to produce a strong result here at a track with such a rich history!

Trent Hindman

Solid lessons learned at VIR and a few adjustments over the last week or so will provide a great opportunity to fight for the podium positions at Indianapolis. We’re fortunate we had taken some time to test here a few weeks ago, so we have huge confidence in the Wright Motorsports/VOLT team’s exceptional preparation for a racetrack that should suit us quite well.
